Sun Style Ba Gua
The Phoenix Form emphasizes upper body rotation and flexibility in the waist and spine. The body is rotated as it spins, affording unique movement patterns that not only strengthen the torso muscles but also go a long way to improving balance in uncommon positions. Technically, the Phoenix Form is applicable to many wrestling-type takedowns, including leg tackles, hip tosses of various kinds as well as spiral throws.
The Monkey Form is the last of the "Xing Zhuang" or moving post exercises in the Sun Bagua zhang system. Although it looks deceptively simple, it provides a thorough workout for the waist and torso muscles, increases the rotational flexibility of the spine all within the context of stabilizing the lower back and hips. Technically, the Monkey Form includes joint locking throws, projection techniques and head control takedowns.
Sun Style Taijiquan
Sun style Taijiquan is the youngest of all of the traditional taijiquan forms. The system was created by Sun Lutang, one of the most respected and famous martial artists of his time. Sun combined the Xingyiquan and Baguazhang he had mastered in his youth with his practice of Wu/Hao Taijiquan, effectively synthesizing the best of the three Internal styles into one coherent system. Sun style Taijiquan is known for its lively stepping method, higher stance work and agile body use. There is a distinct emphasis on correct posture, efficient movement, remaining stable in the midst of motion and the cultivation of a unique method of coordinating the force of the entire body. As a method of health cultivation, practice of the form will enhance balance, stabilize the core, coordinate all parts of the body and provide a relatively gentle, yet thorough conditioning of all bodily systems. As a martial art, the techniques are practical and applied exactly as practiced in the form.
